Help! My Shower Drain Is Blocked, What Should I Do?

You’ve come home from a long, hard day at work and jumped into a warm shower only to find yourself standing in an ever-rising pool of water. Now you’re just standing there – naked, soapy, and not sure what to do next. Good thing you turned that water off, as annoying as it is. A blocked shower drain can wreak havoc if left unattended. Water can seep into your floors and possessions, leaving bad smells, stagnating water, and bacteria.

So, what do you do? As Kirrawee’s local blocked shower drain specialists, we want to help by sharing a couple of our trade secrets. Let’s take a look!

Sudden Blockage

If your shower drain suddenly becomes blocked, it’s likely to be a superficial problem. Here are two tricks you can try before moving onto more serious measures.

Baking Soda And White Vinegar

Avoid using chemical drain cleaners, as not only are they toxic and caustic, but they’re not guaranteed to work. They are, however, guaranteed to damage your drainage system over time. This home remedy is a natural one, involving ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. You’ll have to stay soapy for a few hours though, as it needs time to work its magic.

Pour half a cup of baking soda down your shower drain. Then, chase it with half a cup of distilled white vinegar. This will cause a fizzing reaction that will eat away at the blockage if it’s a simple buildup of organic matter. After one hour, pour boiling water down the drain to flush it.

Plunger

Plungers are incredibly simple yet effective tools. Take off your shower drain cover, place the plunger over the opening, push in and pull out repeatedly to create a suction. If it’s not staying put, add some petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar) around the edges of the suction pad for a complete seal. Submerging it in water during this process will also help induce a suction effect. If this doesn’t work, it may be time to swap your plunger for a plumber.

Consistent Blockage

Call In The Cavalry

If your shower drain is constantly getting blocked or none of the above tricks worked, then it’s time to call in professional help. This indicates that the blockage is either more severe, deeper in your pipes, or caused by damaged or deteriorating pipes – all of which require specialist tools and techniques. For example, a deeper blockage will require CCTV cameras and drain augers to identify and reach. And more severe blockages caused by damaged pipes will require no-dig pipe relining.
